Fenway Park is more than just a ballpark in Boston, Massachusetts. It’s also a place that lives in the hearts, and minds, and memories of generations of Red Sox fans. Fenway Park is hallowed ground; a place where men became legends, and legends played ball. Their presence lives on at The Park and always will. That is the idea behind our Fenway Park Red Sox Mural – that the Park and the Players are inseparable, and fans can still walk in the footsteps of giants.
Our Fenway Park Red Sox Mural features a sweeping panoramic view of a night game at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, and it contains scores of realistic portraits of legendary Red Sox players, many of whom were painted life size.
The mural was painted inside a palatial estate in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. The mural runs 55′ feet along the length of a bowling alley inside this luxurious home, and stands 7′ feet in height.
In the mural, the view is from somewhere near Fenway Loge Box 148, Row GG. Here you have a great view of the game and you can clearly see all of Fenway’s iconic architecture and signage. A game is being played at night. The field is illuminated. In the foreground is a gray walkway bordered by a green safety fence.
The first 16′ feet of the mural is set in a concourse, or hallway, at Fenway Park. This area contains 16 portraits of legendary Red Sox players – namely, Jason Varitek, Jonathan Papelbon, Terry Francona, Dennis Eckersley, Carl Yastrzemski, Joe Cronin, Fred Lynn, Ted Williams, Roger Clemens, Mookie Betts, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, Dwight Evans, Luis Tiant, David “Big Papi” Ortiz, and Curt Schilling.
We specifically designed the mural to create an interaction between the Red Sox players in the mural and the actual activity in the room. This is why we have 16 players gathered around the approach area of the bowling alley – to watch the bowlers bowl.
Just imagine getting ready to throw while Varitek and Papelbon are laughing; Eckersley, Lynn, and Betts are smiling; Williams and Johnny Pesky have their hands in their pockets, waiting to see what you can do; Tiant stares intently, while Big Papi leans in from behind a steel I-beam.
In the background behind the players, we painted the concourse filled with Fenway’s green steel I-beams, then flooded the windows up above with bright white lights from the game.
In the center of the mural is an alcove with an actual bench from Fenway Park, plus a seating row sign hanging from the ceiling. Just behind it are five famous Red Sox players, all painted life size. From left: Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk, Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez, and Tim Wakefield. Behind them is a night game at Fenway, already in progress. There is a sea of people watching the game:
On the far left is Red Sox Announcer Jerry Remy, who is smiling broadly as he watches the action on the bowling alley. The big Gulf sign shines behind him. Next to Jerry Remy is Wade Boggs, who is turned to look at the game. The iconic Green Monster towers over left field and features a meticulously painted scoreboard and signage, including signs for the Red Sox Foundation, the Jimmy Fund, and B Strong. Just above are billboards for Samuel Adams beer, Coca Cola, and WEEI sports radio, along with the Jumbotron. Below, behind the railing, is a section of the crowd that stretches nearly the entire length of the mural:
Once the mural was complete, four steel I-beams painted Fenway green were placed alongside the bowling alley to create a visual segue between the mural and the Fenway themed design elements in the room. A bright yellow Pesky Pole sculpture was also placed at the far end of the mural.
