Step into the spirit of the Ocean State with this vibrant Rhode Island Montage Mural—a true love letter to all that makes Rhode Island unique. Spanning an impressive 30 feet in length and 9 feet in height, this mural was created to capture the essence of the state, from its rich history to its local culture and iconic landmarks.
Featuring a dynamic blend of historical and contemporary Rhode Island imagery, the mural showcases:
- The majestic Rhode Island State House, standing proudly at the heart of Providence.
- Pawtucket’s Slater Mill, a testament to the state’s industrial history.
- The iconic Newport Bridge, linking Rhode Island’s past and present with its stunning architecture.
- Trinity Church, a symbol of the state’s strong religious and cultural heritage.
- A tribute to the Kentish Guards, one of the oldest military units in America.
- The legendary Princess Redwing of the Seven Crescents, a nod to the state’s Native American history.
- The beloved PawSox baseball team, an iconic part of Rhode Island’s sports culture.
- The statue of Roger Williams, the founder of the state, looking down over the city he established.
- A playful reference to Rhode Islanders’ love of personalized vanity plates, a quirky and beloved state tradition.
- And, of course, a tribute to Rhode Island’s favorite Polar Bear, an unmistakable local mascot.
All of these elements, along with many more, came together in a mural that was both colorful and meaningful—showcasing the essence of Rhode Island in a single, eye-catching artwork.
A Lasting Legacy at the VA Medical Center
This mural was painted in the foyer of the VA Medical Center in Providence in the year 2000, where it immediately became a beloved feature for veterans, staff, and visitors alike. The Rhode Island Montage Mural was a standout creation, filled with local flavor and a spirit of fun, and it quickly captured the imaginations of everyone who saw it. It was particularly popular among the veterans who found comfort and pride in its familiar scenes.
This mural was the third in a series of works created for the Veterans Administration. The first, titled Home of the Brave, was unveiled in 1996 at the grand opening of the V.A. Primary Care Center in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The second, Land of the Free, was completed in 1998 for the V.A. Primary Care Center in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Each mural was designed to celebrate American values and local culture, while serving as a source of pride and inspiration for the veterans who interacted with them daily.
Close-Up Details and Special Moments
Below, you’ll see a few details from the mural that showcase its intricate storytelling. On the left is a PawSox player, captured mid-action, bringing the energy of Rhode Island’s baseball culture to life. On the right, you’ll find Princess Redwing of the Seven Crescents, depicted with grace and dignity, a beautiful homage to the state’s Native American heritage.
This is a key to the mural, created by the VA to help viewers connect with the individual elements in the mural.
A Fond Farewell
Sadly, the Rhode Island Montage Mural was lost in 2018, when the VA Medical Center underwent a complete renovation and the wall it was painted on was removed. Although the mural is no longer on display, it was cherished by the veterans, staff, and visitors for a full 18 years. The artwork served as a colorful reminder of the rich history and unique character of Rhode Island—a lasting tribute to the state that will always be remembered.
